Application Process
Edelweiss Private Academy offers Grades K - 8 programs to students with autism, learning disabilities, anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD and students who experience other academic and/or social difficulties in main stream education.
In order for the admission to be completed, each student is assessed and recommendations are offered to parents/guardians about a suitable grade level and programming.
Note that Edelweiss Private Academy obtains an academic and behavioural history from your child's previous school to help determine placement and programming.
Parents/guardians are encouraged to provide all assessments and documentation that could help the staff become better acquainted with the student.
EPA enrolment is limited to ensure small teacher to student ratios. Students are placed according to skill and grade level, while also considering how to best facilitate social growth and development among peers. Once the Application for Admission is submitted, we will contact you to further discuss placement and enrolment.
Eligibility
All students must undergo an intake baseline assessment. This assessment is designed to identify whether the student can participate in a classroom environment in the absence of aggressive, destructive or self-injurious behaviour, whether they require additional support, which classroom and program would best suit them and which Direct Instruction level the student is able to participate in. All students must meet the minimum requirement to attend EPA prior to booking an assessment ie) students cannot demonstrate extensive aggressive, destructive or self-injurious behaviour.
Please note that EPA is not a behavioural intervention school therefore, we do not provide interventions for extensive aggressive, destructive or self-injurious behaviours in the school environment.
Students who have a history of engaging in high-risk incidents, self-injurious behavior or aggression towards others or the environment must address these behaviours prior to entering the classroom environment.
Once the student is referred to a clinician, the clinician will prescribe what is recommended for the student which may include a behavioural support plan, additional support or additional services that may or may not be provided by EPA.
If behaviours are observed during the baseline assessment by the intake coordinator, they will provide details pertaining to any existing concerns and additional support that may be needed in the final report. Once these behaviors have been addressed the hope is to have the student integrated into the classroom. Upon written recommendation from the clinicians in charge, new students may re-apply to EPA upon successful completion of the behavior modification program with their chosen clinical treatment center.
Students who already attend EPA and begin to engage in aggressive, destructive or self-injurious behaviours will be removed from class and referred for clinical services. However, if the family does not agree to the recommendations or is refusing to provide the support as prescribed by the clinician, then the student will not be able to attend EPA. Please see the fee schedule for clinical services.
